Requirements to qualify for studio access

Partial and All Access are intended for potters who can work safely and confidently without instruction or supervision.

Applicants must:

  • Complete a minimum of two pottery courses: one handbuilding course and one wheel-throwing course. Additional course and studio experience is strongly encouraged.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of studio safety, clay handling, equipment use, cleanup, and shared-studio etiquette.
  • Be able to work independently without instruction or supervision.
  • Complete an interview with The Kiln Room team.

Two courses represent the minimum experience required and do not guarantee approval for Independent Studio Access.

Previous pottery courses or equivalent experience from another established studio may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Studio Orientation

All Partial and All Access participants must complete a Studio Orientation before gaining independent access to the studio.

Studio Orientations will be scheduled once per month and will cover:

  • Studio procedures and expectations.
  • Safety and emergency procedures.
  • Equipment use.
  • Cleaning and shared-studio responsibilities.
  • Clay, glaze, and firing procedures.
  • Storage and work-in-progress policies.
  • Access procedures and studio blockout periods.

Independent Studio Access will begin once you have been approved and completed a Studio Orientation.

Clay & Firing

Firings are not included in Independent Studio Access fees and are charged separately.

To protect our kilns and ensure firing compatibility, all clay that will be fired in The Kiln Room kilns must be purchased from The Kiln Room.

Outside clay may not be fired in our kilns, even if it is labelled for the same firing temperature.

Studio Storage

Partial and All Access include designated storage space.

All personal belongings, tools, pottery supplies, and in-progress work must remain within your assigned storage area when not in use.

Additional shelf space may be available to rent for an additional fee, subject to availability.

The Kiln Room is not responsible for lost, damaged, or broken personal items or work stored in the studio.

Subscription & Renewal

Independent Studio Access is available in recurring three-month and annual terms, billed in full and in advance.

At the end of each paid term, access automatically renews for another term of the same length unless cancelled before the next scheduled billing date.

Introductory Rates

As we launch and develop our Independent Studio Access program, pricing, access hours, and program structure may be reviewed and adjusted.

Participants will receive advance notice of any changes to their renewal rate or access level.

Approval & Studio Expectations

Independent Studio Access is not a drop-in pottery program and does not include instruction. Participants are expected to work independently and contribute to a safe, respectful, and clean shared studio.

Approval for Independent Studio Access and the appropriate access level is at the discretion of The Kiln Room.

Access may be suspended or revoked if studio policies, safety procedures, cleanup expectations, equipment rules, or community guidelines are not followed.
